character design

Some character design I have been doing. I truly love designing characters, its so much fun getting into character yourself to help your drawings.

Student room layout

This is a digital painting of my student room. Working with a 3rd year, I was shown how to compose a digital image like this and in doing so, gained a vast amount of knowledge.
This started as an accurate pencil drawing of the room which was scanned. I then took a photo from a similar angle in the desired lighting. In photoshop, I created many layers representing the 'values' or tonal ranges using the lasso tool. Once this was correct, I used masks to colour each layer whilst colour picking from my original photo. I used custom brushes, some I made, some given to me which I loved using! The final lighting was added with the gradient tool.
I am very happy with this as its realistic yet not overly detailed (I like details so its nice painting in a different way).

Life Drawing

More life drawing from my autumn term in my 2nd year. I really feel like I am improving and understanding human anatomy.

Here are some of the concepts and idea I have been working on for my director. Obviously I cannot post everything as it is not my film but here are a few things I can show. Really enjoying this project!

Thursday 5 September 2013

So this is what I have been doing most of this summer! Where I live, we have a huge carnival called the Battle of Flowers. Each parish makes a float and I was lucky enough for my design to be chosen. I did a float based on the film 'How to train your dragon'. It features a life sized Toothless with flapping wings, glowing eyes and smoke, a huge viking ship, a 10 foot harestailed sail and more! I did design work whilst I was at uni but finished the build that summer. It was amazing!
Below are some photos from it including my original drawing and T-shirt design.

A creature I designed and made in my model making night class. He has a metal wire frame and is modelled in sculpy.
This was my layout project I did at university. The room is a 'wizard's research room'. I hand drew the lineart, got my textures from wood scrapings on paper (which I scanned in). The final image was shaded and coloured on photoshop.
Although it took a long time before I was happy with it, I am really thrilled with how it came out.

Some of the life drawing I have been doing in my course. I really feel like I have improved since starting this course and shall continue drawing!
Most are charcoal.

Life Drawing at Marwell Zoo

Marwell was fantastic as I had never been to an actual zoo before so was quite amazed too see such a variety of animals. Still do not particularly like the idea of caged animals purely for the satisfaction of human but hey ho. Anyway, these are some of the drawings produced, all made using pencils, brush pens, water colour, pastels and poshca paint pens.

You can probably tell that I rather enjoyed drawing the giraffes! Such fascinating creatures!

Animal walk line test

Basic animal walk cycle I did. Not perfect but really enjoyed doing this. Capturing animals movement is tricky but very rewarding and also fascinating! Learnt a lot through this project.

A person piece of work just for fun of a character of mine. Digital mixed media painting.

Tonal studies of from the same layout drawings in various lighting:

Desk at night, pencil

Desk in the day, natural light, pencil

Night, copic markers

Daylight, copic markers

interior at night time, digital.

Some of my layout drawings. We were told to draw our rooms at university. I have certainly learnt a lot about about how different line qualities can show so many things such as distance, texture etc.
The rooms in our halls are rather 'cosy' to say the least so getting a decent view was very difficult.

My desk.
